The first weekend of every October since 1957 the city of Tusin, CA (in The OC) holds an annual event called Tustin Tiller Days. This year the event will be held October 3rd, 4th and 5th.

The weekend long celebration of Tustin’s agricultural heritage kicks off with a race. The  Rubber Boot Race became a part of Tustin Tiller Days to break the record established by the Scotts in 2007 when they had 1,022 rubber boot clad runners. The race begins at 8 am at Mervyn’s in the Courtyard at the corner of Irvine Blvd and Holt Ave. where each runner will get a pancake breakfast at the Chamber of Commerce Booth before they run through Old Towne Tustin in their rubber boots. The entry fee is $20 for adults, $15 for kids and seniors. All participants must wear rubber boots during the race and sign the Guiness World Records Log at the finish line. Part of the profits will go to (SOS) Save Our Sports, supporting after school athletics in TUSD elementary campuses.

The pancake breakfast is open to the public for only $5 per person on Saturday, October 4, 2008
from 7:30 AM to 10:30 AM.

Following the race is the community parade that kicks off at 10am featuring local high school bands, The Indian Guides and Princesses, dance teams, Miss Tustin on her float and other community groups. My friend Berk’s daughter has marched in the parade for several years with her Girl Scout troop, too cute.

The Tustin Tiller Days carnival is starts directly after the parade and ends at 10pm Sunday evening. There is no admission charge, but the best bet is to buy a ride wrist band for $20 as it allows unlimited rides. The carnival is also an opportunity for local non-profit groups to raise funds. Over the years, local civic organizations have raised thousands of dollars to benefit a wide variety of local needs. Bring your apetite as the food is amazing. Everything from the usual carnival fare like corndogs, funnel cake and Dippin’ Dots to Middle Eastern Food, bar-b-que and Asian food.

This year, Tustin Tiller Days will be on:

October 3rd, 4th, and 5th, 2008

The hours the festival will be open are:

  • Friday, October 3rd: 4:00 PM – 11:00 PM
  • Saturday, October 4th: 10:00 AM – 11:00 PM
  • Sunday, October 5th: 11:00 AM – 8:00 PM

Note: Carnival will remain open until 10:00 PM on Sunday.

Parade: Saturday @ 10:00 AM

Rubber boot running. Now there is an event I’ve never heard of. Bet I’d still be the slowest one.

A “tiller” tills the soil in farming. Good question.

    Travis-
It seems there’s a Guiness Record for just about everything. I think the pancakes would make me slow too.
